20-year old Thomas Diethart from Austria secures himself the victory of the 62nd new year’s jumping ahead of his teammate Thomas Morgenstern and Oberstdorf's winner Simon Ammann.
That Diethart is not a one-hit-wonder is clear since his amazing results in Oberstdorf's qualification (4th), competition (3rd) and in yesterday's qualification that he also won. With jumps of 141 and 140.5m (296.1pts) he left behind the experienced Thomas Morgenstern (139/139m) by 11points and Simon Ammann (133.5/139m) by an advantage of even 18.1points. Diethart seems to be unstoppable and is now leading the Four-Hills overall standing with a result of 593.4points. This table looks the same as today’s podium.
While those three had an amazing day, also Anders Fannemel could celebrate. He reached the fourth place (138/136.5m; 275.7pts) and missed the podium by inches. Noriaki Kasai became best Japanese again on rank six (135/133m), while Andreas Wellinger started up again with the fifth place (134/134.5m). Kamil Stoch’s dream of winning the Four-Hills overall went farther away for him as he could only reach the seventh rank. But beside him also last year’s winner Gregor Schlierenzauer won’t be happy about his results as he ended up as eighth. After happy results for the top six we also saw some frightful moments for some other nations. Germany was shaking because of some cruel KO pairs today.
Eisenbichler had to jump against Kraft and had no chance. Marinus Kraus went KO against Rune Velta, who ended the competition on the 23rdrank. One half of all ski-jumping fans already saw Martin Schmitt reaching the final round against a weak Anssi Koivuranta, who is lacking training. The other half saw him losing nerves (again). But neither of both possibilities became reality. Martin Schmitt showed a good try of 128m but Anssi Koivuranta set a jump that not even he expected: 136.5m. Fortunately Schmitt made it through the lucky losers (27th) and good that Koivuranta reached the 10th place in the end. Let’s continue: Michael Neumayer lost against Schlierenzauer by only 0.5m, while Severin Freund was out against Taku Takeuchi. And it was also clear that Karl Geiger and Daniel Wenig would go home after their duels. Only Andreas Wank (15th) was able to win his fight. But Germany also could notice that Richard Freitag seems to be able to cope with his periostitis as he was leading the lucky losers after his duel against Kamil Stoch. The German finished as 9th.
Also nice to mention are the results of Jan Matura (11th), Janne Ahonen (14th) and Jernej Damjan (22nd), who also one of the best lucky losers. Anders Jacobsen fell back to rank 26 although his performance looks promising. His colleague Bardal wasn’t able to keep up with the best today (13th).
News:
While Italy didn’t even reach the competition, the Italian Ski Federation decided to take out Davide Bresadola and send Sebastian Colloredo to Austria instead. We’re excited to find out whether this can take Italy into the competitions. For everyone, who is eager to know whether Martin Schmitt will also jump in the last two competitions of the Four-Hills-Tournament: Italy’s Eurosport reports that German head coach Werner Schuster decided to take Karl Geiger and Marinus Kraus to Innsbruck, while Martin Schmitt won’t be part of the team then. Until now, it is not clear, whether he’ll continue this season in the COC or WC or at all. We’ll keep you updated!
Mark your calendars:
The qualification in Innsbruck will take place on January 3rd at 14:00, the competition follows on January 4th at 14:00 as well, while the last venue Bischofshofen will be entered on January 5th for the qualification at 16:30 and on January 6th at 16:00 for the final of the Four-Hills. Stay tuned and let yourself be informed by SkiJumpingItaly!
We wish you all the best for this upcoming year and promise you lots of amazing ski jumping, fast and special news, incredible interviews and wonderful pictures! By the way: Our merch store will open soon!
