Severin Freund takes the victory on the large hill in Lillehammer
08/12/2013 22:05

The German Severin Freund won today’s second world cup competition of the weekend in Lillehammer, Norway curtly ahead of the local hero Anders Bardal. Third became Daiki Ito from Japan.
After Marinus Kraus’ second place in Kuusamo one week ago and the strong third rank from Richard Freitag at his comeback, the German team can be very happy about the third ‘strike’ in the Olympics season which has just started. The 25-year-old Severin Freund won his first world cup this season on the large hill in Lillehammer (HS 138) with jumps on 132.5 and 137.0 meters.
The second rank was taken by the Norwegian Anders Bardal by only two points of residue (277.0 points) and with jumps on 131.0 and 138.0 meters. The Japanese Daiki Ito took the third place (275.7 points; 132.5 and 138.0 meters).
The rest of the Norwegian team won’t be too happy about today’s results at the first ‘home game’ of the season. For Tom Hilde the competition day ended even before it has actually started. He finished the qualification only on rank 47 which wasn’t enough to enter the competition round. His teammate Anders Jacobsen who had his comeback after a long injury break could only manage to finish 30th (122.5 and 123.5 meters). A little better the competition went for Anders Fannemel who jumped on 132.0 meters in the first round. Unfortunately, he couldn’t repeat this performance in the second competition round. In the end, he finished only 17th.
Japanese with good team performance
The Japanese seemed to have a better start into the new season and proved their strength once more. Beside Daiki Ito on the podium, also Noriaki Kasai (4th; 270.7 points; five points behind Ito) and Taku Takeuchi (8th; 255 points) into the top ten.
Austrians with trouble
Less successful were the Austrians in today’s competition. Thomas Morgenstern became 5th and took the best result of the whole team. Yesterday’s winner from the normal hill, Gregor Schlierenzauer, had to be satisfied with only rank 15 after two average jumps on 127.0 and 121.0 meters. Stefan Kraft and Manuel Fettner finished 25th and 28th while Andreas Kofler missed the second round.
The returnee from Finland, Janne Ahonen, showed two good jumps (124.0 and 126.0 meters) and eventually finished 9th. Not a bad result for the five-time winner of the Four Hill Tournament :)
Two scary moments for the Swiss team
In Norway, the winter has just arrived the last week and over night there fell a lot of fresh snow. This caused a smoothly and very slippery run-out zone which made it difficult for the athletes to make a proper landing. That especially became a problem for the Swiss Simon Ammann. After he had a fall during the training round, he also fell at the landing of his first competition jump. Luckily, the 32-year-old was fine after the falls. Due to the width of his first jump (129.5 meters) he reached the second round despite bad style notes from the judges and jumped on 131.5 meters just like nothing has happened. :) He finished the competition on the 19thplace.
Best result of his career
Italian Davide Bresadola reached his best individual result in a World-Cup competition so far on rank 13 with jumps of 132.5 and 131.5m. Congratulazioni, Davide!
