Krzysztof Biegun takes his first World-Cup victory in windy Klingenthal

24/11/2013 21:58

The Olympic Season 2013/2014 could not have started more surprisingly than with a victory of 19 year old Polish Krysztof Biegun. In a very windy competition he could outpace Andreas Wellinger from Germany and Jurij Tepes from Slovenia.

No one of the spectators believed that the Jury will start the competition when after two hours of delay the first jumper quit the bar to start the inrun. Start Number five Krysztof Biegun could use the good wind and landed after 142,5m which was the furthest jump of the day. Second placed Andreas Wellinger showed again in which great shape he is as he jumped on 132m. Jurij Tepes proofed that we can count on the Slovenians this season again as he took the third place with 134,5m. Another surprise was done by German Marinus Kraus who fulfilled National-Olympic-Qualification with rank 8.

There were not just some positive surprises but also bad ones. Due to the changing wind top athletes like Kamil Stoch and Tom Hilde missed the points and Severin Freund just jumped on the 28th place.

Gregor Schlierenzauer and Anders Bardal decided together not start and left the hill right before their jumps.

Andreas Kofler could not handle his skis after landing but as the Austrian doctors said he luckily doesn´t carry away grave injuries.

All in all it was a bad day for Norway as the best Norwegians were Ole Marius Ingvaldsen on 13th and Anders Fannemel on 29th place but a really good one for Poland, which could settle four athletes in the Top 10 (Piotr Zyla 5 and Maciej Kot 6, Jan Ziobro 10) and also the both Swiss Jumpers Simon Amman with rank 7 and Gregor Deschwanden with Rank 10 had luck with the conditions.

Comebackers Janne Ahonen and Janne Happonen can also be satisfied with Rank 16 and 20.The Jury decided to cancel the second round due to the strange wind.

Results:

1. Krysztof Biegun 135.8

2. Andreas Wellinger 132.8

3. Jurij Tepes 131.4

4. Taku Takeuchi 130.7

5. Piotr Zyla 130.6

6. Maciej Kot 127.6

7. Simon Ammann 125.8

8. Marinus Kraus 125.6

9. Jan Ziobro 125.2

10. Gregor Deschwanden 120.1

Comment of the day by competition winner Krzyzstof Biegun, Poland: I’m very happy about my jump. It was a great weekend and I hoped it was not the end of that weekend, I hoped for a second round. I'm really excited about my first World-Cup victory. I didn't expect it.

Comment by our expert Gorm Johansson: My post about the conditions will be short this time. There is also no use to make any conclusions about teams or arhlets. .this weekend was tanken by the bad wind...and todays comp was so strange...hope it will be better next weekend.
