The lovely 25-year old Pole took the chance to gain the gold medal from the large hill in Val di Fiemme after furious jumps of 131.5 and 130m (295.8points). He was already in the leading position after the first round. When he was second in the competition from the normal hill, his nerves might have been shaking too much. He fell back to rank eight in the end and lost his chance for a medal. But what happened once does not need to happen again. This time Stoch kept his calmness and flew himself to the title of the World-Champion! Congratulations for such an amazing performance in his fifth WCS-participation!
Silver went to Peter Prevc. The 20-year old has a lucky streak and could win his second medal in these events. Well done to the strong Slovenian, who is fighting hard to make himself the best in the team. His jumps of 130.5m twice (289.7points) made him unbeatable for the rest of the field.
Anders Jacobsen, who had an amazing comeback this season and was the sad loser in this season’s Four-Hills-Tournament finally was honored for his results. He came close to Prevc with only 0.6points disadvantage and won the bronze medal (129/131m; 289.1points).
The unlucky fourth has been Wolfgang Loitzl (128.5/132.5m; 284.9points). Richard Freitag, who wanted to get a medal so badly, lost a place in the final round and ended up on rank six behind Jan Matura, who –of course- has been the best Czech jumper in the field.
Andreas Wank, who has been seventh after the first round, lost his place to Simon Ammann, who has been tenth before. Also the rest of the ranks have been shaken a lot. Gregor Schlierenzauer stayed behind the top fifteen after a weak try of 125m but in the second round he used his chance to climb places with 128.5m from a lower gate. He finished eighth. Close behind him has been German’s Severin Freund, who came there from place 13.
Daiki Ito completed the top ten. Also Thomas Morgenstern was able to gain a better position (from rank 22 to the 16th place). While jumpers like Denis Kornilov, Vladimir Zografski, Sebastian Colloredo and Dimitry Vassiliev missed the final round, the competition brought points to Kaarel Nurmsalu (26th), Vincent Descombes-Sevoie (29th) and Roman Koudelka (30th).
All in all it was a gate- and place-hopping but really tensing competition. Tactic seems to become more important in ski-jumping, where there are not much other advantages left. But as it was shown, not everyone is profiting from the gate changes. One still has to be an awesome flyer to be able to cope with the lesser speed. But the fact is: The farther you come, the harder a telemark becomes. So maybe a few meters less but more points for the telemark and a plus for the gate compensation can bring one a better position in the end. What is your opinion on this? Take the opportunity to discuss with us!
And turn on the TV in time to see the team-competition from the large hill! It starts Saturday at 16.30!
