Born in Bressanone on February the 10th in 1994, she has made her debut in Continental Cup in 2006, before the introduction of the Ladies World Cup in the 2011/2012 season.
Along with Roberta D’Agostina and Elena Runggaldier is one of our key points of the national women's ski jumping Italian team, trained by Julien Eybert – Guillion , and by the former Italian ski jumper Alessio Bolognani. This season she seems to be in a great shape, in particular, our athlete has already made the podium twice, in the current winter season. The first one in Lillehammer, a third place with Italy in the mixed team event, in the opening day of the new ski jumping season, and the other one, which is her first podium in a ladies competition, she came second in Schonach (GER). Currently she is at the 7th place of the overall world cup standing table, so the ski jumper that Skijumpingitaly has decided to meet for this interview is Evelyn Insam. After ten years since the first WSC, next month will take place in Val di Fiemme the World Ski Championships. So we decided to ask to Evelyn about her goals for the upcoming events – especially the WSC- and what’s are her expectations. Skijumpingitaly: Hello Evelyn! Is a pleasure to have you here with us. So what can you tell us about you fabulous season so far, which keep seeing you race after race gaining important points in the WC? Evelyn Insam: Hello! I’m really happy about my season so far, I hope to continue to improve. SJI: What’s new in this season compared to the past ones? Did you made any changes? EI: I have trained a lot during the summer, now I want to improve my jumping and having fun. SJI: You had an incredible start of the new season with the mixed team with an historical 3rd place in Lillehammer. What you guys have felt to be there on the podium along with Norway and Japan? Would you ever expected to finish on the podium at the very first race of the season? EI: We didn’t expected, I guess this is why our emotions were higher that day. It was really a great feeling, and to share it with the team was amazing. SJI: How’s compete with the guys? Usually in a team, especially in a ski jumping team, where you always travel together, directed to the various races around the world creates a bond, you, boys and girls often do not travel together, so as you are able to establish this harmony? EI: Mixed competitions are really a good idea, is just great to compete along with the guys. Andrea and Sebastian, we know them for a long time and we have always been a very united team. That day we all felt very well about the competition, and each one of us have managed to get good jumps. SJI: What is it the best part to compete along with Sebastian and Andrea? EI: They always in a good mood, we having fun jumping with them, that in ski jumping is very important for me. SJI: What can you tell us about the kind of preparation you did before the start of the new winter season? On what you have been able to concentrate more your work? EI: I focused myself more on the take off. SJI: The females Continental Cup is becoming more and more a past thing with the new formula of the female World Cup, which is now at its second year of life. Would you ever had expected it? EI: The level in the female ski jumping is getting better, and higher, this is a beautiful thing, I hope it’ll continue in that way. SJI: On what do you think there’s still need to improve on a global level, to be able to bring more people to follow the ladies of ski jump? EI: From my point of view , there’s still need time, there should be more competitions as well.I’d love to jump on the bigger hills. SJI: Next year girls you will not only have the World Cup to think about, but you also be present at your first ever Winter Games for your discipline. Personally how do you feel to know to go back to Sochi, - where else for you on the first day you ended with a great 6th place – with a completely different goal in mind compared to the WC? EI: Is great to know we can also finally compete at the Olympics as well. I hope that this will help female ski jumping to grow further, getting more girls ready to start with this beautiful sport as ski jumping. SJI: Let’s do not forget that before the games for the azzurri there will be a much awaited event for this season, the World Championships in Val di Fiemme. How do you feel about that? Excited to be participating in a such important event hosted by your home country? EI: Compete at home is for sure a positive thing for all of us, I hope that many people will come to support us! This will help us to jump longer. SJI: At the previous WSC you have ended with an excellent 8th place, what expectations you have for the this championships next month? What is the goal that above all you wanna achieve more? EI: I’m still young and I still lack of experience, plus I still need to improve myself. I hope to improve those things and get two good jumps, than we will see. SJI: For you, this is a year to frame. Not only you are in the top positions of the overall world cup table but you also won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships in Liberec. How was it like to have that medal around your neck?
EI: It's a great feeling and I am very happy that after hard training I was able to jump well at the World Junior. I must say that it is even more beautiful after the fourth place last year.
SJI: Tell us about your day before the race, what was your feeling before the race? EI: I felt very good physically and head, and I knew I was able to jump well. It was a fantastic day.
SJI: Your jumps always seem to be more consistent, as well as your current fitness level. At the end of the gap from Sara Takanashi was only of 8.5 points.
EI: We are working very hard to improve and be able to become even more consistent.
SJI: Is there any one above all that you would like to dedicate this medal?
EI: I want to thank all those who made this possible and who support me always. SJI: The national women's ski jumping it keeps growing, but still this sport is not followed in the right measures in Italy, so that also the commentators for the national TV are struggling to have some knowledge about this sport, and whoever is part of it. What do you think about this? EI: Female ski jumping is still a young sport, and it needs time to grow, and reach the same level as the men’s, but I hope that with the Olympics and the WSC in Italy, this will help the grow to speedy up. SJI: In other European countries ski jumping - which in Italy is considered one of the "minor sports" - as cross country, biathlon or nordic combined, just to name a few, is see in a different way compared to our country. In your opinion, what should be really done, to increase the public interest and also the media towards this discipline? EI: Is not easy to get media attention, we can only think to jump well, getting good results hoping that this will help. SJI: Let 's talk about you outside ski jumping world, what do you like to do when you not jumping? EI: I don’t have too much free time at the moment, as I’m studying to graduate at school, but when I got time I like hanging out with my friends. SJI: How your sporting career began? Have you had any idol you wanted to emulate when you were a kid? EI: One of my neighbors saw me jumping, with the skis for alpine ski, near my home. My first trainer was Romed Moroder, asked if I wanted to start this as a sporting career. SJI: Why ski jumping, instead I don’t know another sport, like Volley, Tennis or another one. What does it have ski jumping that attract so much? EI: Surely the fact of being able to fly, is the most beautiful thing in our sport. It is something which is hard to explain. SJI: What do you girls do when you are at home? You spending time together or when you are at home you switch off all? EI: We really are a great team, and we see each other also outside the ski jumping fields. SJI: And what is the relationship with your coaches? Spending so much time away from home, they have probably been taken as a sort of leading figures I suppose? EI: We have a great relationship with them, we have lots of fun outside the training duties, where we need to be concentrate. SJI: Last question, what do you wanna do when you “grow” up? EI: I’d like to stay in ski jumping, maybe as coach but I don’t know yet, we will see.It was really a great pleasure to interview our azzurra and we wish her to continue always in this way.
