Planica - the winter wonderland
Evey year the ski jumping season ends in this wonderful place. For this special weekend to Planica comes thousands of spectators from the whole world. What makes this place so special?
1. Atmosphere. The atmosphere in Planica is always amazing, and that proved also this year. Ski jumpers from the whole world can enjoy the time spend there and celebrate the ending season. Every year a huge crowd of fans from Slovenia, Poland, Germany, Austria, Norway and many more countries create a big wave of flags and cheer all the ski jumpers - no matter where are they from. The organizers also make this event special, by making a lot of attractions for the fans like concerts for example. It is also a great opportunity for fans to meet&greet the ski jumpers, who are in better mood than usual, I wonder why ;)
2. The hill. The hill Letalnica in Slovenian Planica seen a lot of fantastic competitions. After modernization it joined Vikersundbakken and Kulm as the world's largest hill. All three of them has a K-Point on 200 meter and HS on 225 meter. Ski jumpers joke that Letalnica is like the little sister, because it was modernized and put to use this year. The last record of the hill was set by Bjoern Einar Romoeren in 2005 and the distance of 239 meters was the long-time world record. During this weekend in Planica the new hill record was set by Peter Prevc and now it is localized on 248,5 meter.
3. Fantastic competitions. Every ski jumping fan remembers this one special competition. On March, 20 2005 four world records have been set there. Ski jumpers flew one further than another and many ski jumping fans think that it was the best competition so far. This competition ended with the new world record of 239 meters.
4. The history. Letalnica bratov Gorišek was opened in 1969 in Planica, Slovenia and named after its constructors. Most people call it just Letalnica or Velikanka. In 1972 the first in the history FIS Ski-Flying World Championship have been held there. So far on the Letalnica hill there were held 6 Ski-flying World Championships In 1994 Andreas Goldberger as the first ski jumper crossed the barrier of 200 meters by jumping 202 meters.
